About Me

Hey everybody! My name is Skyler Huspen, and I'm an RD2B. That is, I'm working my way towards becoming a future Registered Dietitian (RD). I'm currently pursuing my masters in nutrition and doing supervised practice rotations in hospital settings.

While I believe nutrition is my true calling, it hasn't always been my passion. I started out as an architecture major at Cornell College before realizing it wasn't for me. Returning home I attended Harper College, where I switched my major and received my associate's degree in nutrition. I was hooked from that point on. I transferred to Dominican and finished up my bachelor's in 2017, progressing into the master's program this fall. 

 While I'm in this course, I'm not actually a teacher. That being said, education is a vital part of the nutrition field. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a client realize they truly have the power to change their health through nutrition and fitness. To have this realization, they need education. I will teach people about how food impacts our health every single day. Technology is growing, and it is a wonderful tool to facilitate learning. Technology allows me to help people with nutrition concerns all over the world, and I think that is truly amazing. I look forward to discovering new ways to share information.  

 On the personal side, I've always been interested in sports and nutrition. Dance was my passion growing up, and I'm an avid Blackhawks fan. Fitness is still important to me, and I am a NASM certified personal trainer. I enjoy traveling with my boyfriend, Bryan, and I'm very close with my family. I have three cats and a dog, and like to read in my free time. 

 While I do have a professional Twitter and a LinkedIn, I've never maintained a professional blog. I'm excited to see it develop.

    Hi Skyler! So happy to have you join us! While not an educator you still may find ways to use the concepts we discuss in your nutrition education for others. I look forward to seeing how you will do this!

    Hi Skyler! I can definitely appreciate the long route towards discovering a career. I also switched majors (probably 5 times) before I settled on psychology as a route towards special education. It'll be nice to see a different perspective on a lot of the thigns we'll go over in this class.

Digital Tattoos

Tattoos In September of 2016, I got a tattoo. Even though I was 24 years old, my mom wasn't happy. She didn't like the idea of putting something on my skin forever. I still remember her calling me, telling me that I had put my first permanent mark on my body. While she's right that my tattoo is permanent, it's not my first. I've had a digital tattoo for over 10 years. I created my first social media account in 2005. I was in eighth grade, and Myspace was really starting to take off. Similar to most millennials, I transitioned to Facebook a few years later. I also branched off into Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and more. I have a pretty extensive digital tattoo. Web 2.0 Tools

For this weeks assignment, I had the opportunity to explore a web tool I was previously not familiar with. I chose Seesaw , and I was very impressed with what this website can do. Logo courtesy of seesaw.me Described by children as "Facebook for kids", Seesaw allows students to join an online "classroom" with their teacher and peers. In that classroom, they can share their work and comment on each other's posts. Teachers can send messages to students and even have the ability to share the online classroom with parents. This is a great way to allow technology to bring teachers, students, and parents together in one place. Seesaw gives students a safe space online to show off all their hard work in class.
